Jacqueline C. Neilson, DVM, DACVB – Short Bio

Dr. Neilson earned her Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine with honors from the University of Florida. Following graduation, she relocated to the Pacific NW where she practiced as an associate veterinarian in a busy small animal practice.  Her drive for knowledge and interest in clinical research led her back to school, this time UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine, where she completed a residency and became Board Certified by the American College of Veterinary Behaviorists in 1997. She owned and operated a referral veterinary practice in Portland, Oregon from 1997-2011. During that time, in addition to clinical practice, she lectured frequently at regional, national and international veterinary conferences, taught at veterinary colleges, conducted clinical research and published books and scientific articles. Her veterinary text, Blackwell’s Five Minute Veterinary Consult Canine and Feline Behavior, written with co-author Dr. Debbie Horwitz, is a best-seller translated into multiple languages.  Her passion for teaching led her to Elanco Animal Health in 2011 where she accepted a position as a field based veterinarian supporting a pharmaceutical sales force and their veterinary customers, a role that she continues in today. In addition to behavior, she has developed a special interest in preventative care, parasites and pain management.  In her free time she volunteers in multiple veterinary/animal related organizations: Dr. Neilson is past-president of the Oregon Veterinary Medical Association & the American College of Veterinary Behaviorists and is a member of the Board of Trustees of the Oregon Humane Society and Feral Cat Coalition of Oregon. She is the 2017 recipient of the UF College of Veterinary Medicine Alumni Achievement Award for her contributions to the profession. She lives in the beautiful city of Portland, Oregon with her husband, two Chihuahuas and four cats.
